Himachal Pradesh Education Directorate would be honored with upcoming university award of the ‘Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme’ (IGNSS), President of India Pranab Mukherjee will confer this award in a scheduled ceremony to be held on 19th November, 2012 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
A spokesman of Press Information Bureau disclosed this on Thursday that award would be shared between Directorate of higher education, Himachal Pradesh and University of Kashmir. Both these institutions have made valuable contribution to NSS, despite facing tremendous adversities. The institutions’ role is not only restricted to planting of saplings, collection/donation of blood, community service but also spreads the creation of durable assets in the community, spreading awareness on social and current issues, setting up of social harmony and disaster mitigation camps, improve literacy levels etc, release said.
Rs. 1,00,000/- Upcoming University Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme (IGNSS) Awards were instituted in 1993-94, during the Silver Jubilee year of NSS to give recognition to selfless service rendered by the NSS volunteers, Program Officers and the Program Coordinators. National Service Scheme was launched during the birth centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi on 24th September 1969 in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students. Today, NSS has more than 3.2. million student volunteers on its roll spread over 299 Universities.
The scheme is implemented through the State Governments and the operations of NSS are at the University and College and Higher Secondary School level.
