Kalka-Shimla train derails, one dead



Shimla: One person was killed and three others were injured when engine and two bogies of the Kalka-Shimla holiday special train derailed near Dharampur in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh today. The injured have been admitted to Dharampur hospital. Identity of the dead person is yet to be established. Eyewitness informed that he apparently seemed a young boy of below thirty years of age.

The accident occurred at about 8:30 am, when the train reportedly “hit stones” lying on the track, said Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ambala, H K Jaggi as he quoted the eye-witness reports. The spot of accident is at Noan village about 60 kilometers from Shimla.

Looking at the tourist rush to Shimla during the holiday season the new holiday special train had been launched on December 20, Saturday.
Jaggi said, “I have been told that the train hit two stones after which it derailed and one locomotive and two coaches came off the track”. The person who died was traveling on the foot board of one of the derailed carriages and fell with impact of the jerk, DRM said. A detailed inquiry would also be conducted to know cause the accident.

The rail track is listed on the world heritage sites of Kalka-Shimla rail track, a status bestowed upon the Kalka-Shimla rail track during this year.The 96 kilometers rail track was completed and opened in 1903.

  1. it is sad to hear the news of the train derailing near dharampur again shows the lack of proper facilities to look into this it is a issue which gets more worse during the rainy season but to my astonishment i havent seen any survelliance by the officials to atleast monitor the tracks i hope the officials should have more safety drills in place and secondly the railway department on this route has so much of potential but we still have those old shops on all stations selling small eats have more good eating joints have more innovative and intiative to attract the youth towards employment if properly funded and supported
