Shimla (Jan 9): Shimla received 25 cm fresh snowfall while Manali experienced 20 cm snowfall during the last 12 hours as all roads connecting Shimla town as NH-22 and NH-88 were off for vehicular traffic.

The Met office said that the capital town already had 40 cm snowfall while Manali had 50 cm snowfall. A number of low-lying areas also experienced snow after a gap of many years and local transport buses were stranded on the roads at several places. The water and power supply remained off in Shimla town due to freezing water pipe and snapping of power cables worsen the woes of people further. There is two to three feet thick snowfall cover at tourist places like Kufir, Narkanda, Kharapathar and Fagu. Tourists resort Kasauli and Chail in Solan district also experienced snowfall.

Snowfall was also experienced at Barog and Solan town after many years. A government spokesperson said traffic on the Chandigarh-Shimla national highway was blocked near Waknaghat, 20 km before Shimla. “The entire belt in Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba district witnessed moderate to heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours,” a weatherman said. Likewise, on the Chandigarh-Manali highway, traffic was stranded near Kullu, 40 kms before Manali.

Picturesque Dalhousie and Chamba towns still remained cut off from the rest of the country for the third day due to heavy snowfall near Banikhet, which is located on the Pathankot-Chamba national highway.

The Met department’s forecast said the western disturbances – storm systems originating from Caspian Sea in Central Asia and moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan region – would start withdrawing today.
