International and Himalayan Paragliding Championship concludes at Bir-Billing

Bir: The International & Himalayan National Paragliding competition concluded in Bir-Billing on 22nd October. More than 220 Para-gliders took part in the competition organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports. Indian Army sent in the largest contingent of 27 pilots to participate in the event.

Around 58 foreign pilots from twelve nations also participated in the event. There were around 3000 take-off, during the the competition. As many as four competitions were held including that of Tandem and Novice category of Accuracy Spot Landing. For the first time all the pilots were provided insurance cover worth Rs 34 crores.

In Federal Aeronautical International (FAI), category-II for men, Itay Taskerman of Israel, who, since the beginning of the championship maintained his lead was adjudged the overall champion securing first position followed by Anatolij Lomovtsev from Russia and Gurpreet Singh Dhindsa from India, who were placed at second and third position respectively.

In International FAI, category II for women, Anna Darchenkova from Russia and Daniela Mladenova from Bulgaria were ranked first and second correspondingly

The Himalayan Paragliding Championship, consolation prize for the only single women participant from India, Sikkim, was given to Ringzing Doma Bhutia.

In Tandem Spot landing competition which was held on Friday, pilots Surjit & Vinod Kumar on accurate spot landing, secured first position. Similarly, pair of Surinder and Shubash Thakur, and that of Amit kumar and Virendar Kumar were ranked second and third respectively. In Novice category, Prakash Kumar, Desh Raj and Samarath got first and second and third position correspondingly.

  1. Bir Billing in HP is a most suited and natural site for Paragliding events. Himachal Pradesh Govt should strive more to popularise Paragliding in HP. If worked out in right earnest, HP would be in first place in the world to attract paragliders to HP.
