Manali (Sept 23): Expressing strong resentment among Manali residents towards government’s indifference in improving civic amenities in the tourist town, all shops, restaurants, and shopping centre in the area remained closed today to mark their protest against government’s inability to clear heaps of debris lying everywhere on the Mall Road.

Thousands of tourists could be seen wandering in search of food and drinks in the town as the whole trading community participated in the bandh. It may me mentioned here that the government had recently announced to develop Manali as a major international destination, While work has been on to give the town an ethnic look, the implementing authorities failed to clear concrete waste the work left.

The Manali Beopar Mandal held a rally and shouted slogans against the administration and the public work department (PWD). They even forwarded a memorandum to the local MLA, deputy commissioner and PWD department. Now the Beopar Mandal has given three days to the administration remove the debris and also asked for speeding up work on repairing the Mall Road and the damaged stretch of highway below Rohtang Pass.
