Deodar sleepers recovered in Mandi

Mandi (Sept 16): A jeep carrying 27 deodar sleepers was impounded and contraband timber seized by the officials of the forest department.

According to divisional forest oficer BK Babu, a team from block office, Nihri, had set up a pre-dawn naka at Taryali village after a tip-off that a timber-laden vehicle was going towards Chowki. Around 3 am forest officials signaled the driver to stop the vehicle. The panicked driver and two other occupants got away under the cover
of darkness, abandoning the vehicle (HP-65-0730) at the spot where the naka had been set up. The police was immediately informed.

It may be recalled that there is a complete ban on green felling in the state. Despite this, timber mafia is allegedly indulging in large scale felling and smuggling of timber.
