Shimla (Aug 28): Many supporters of social activist Anna Hazare today called off their fast as Anna ended his fast unto death at Ramlila maiden in Delhi.
A retired government employee, Lakshmi Chand Thaku, former engineer Desh Raj Sharma, Manav Pundeer, Dhairya Sushant, Depak Manta ended their fast at the Ridge here as UPA government agreed to Anna’s demand to bring a strong Janlokpal bill in the parliament. They offered juice to each other and later held a celebration rally after travelling in an ambulance in the entire towns raising slogens in favour of Anna.
Laxshmi Chand was twice hospitalised following deterioration of his health in last 12 days but he gave a slip to the hospital authority and sat down on fast under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Ridge ground here. Thakur lost four kilos during his fast during which he survived on water and droplets of honey.
A group of five who joined the fast with Thakur also ended their protest. The story was the same elsewhere in Himachal with hunger strikes ending in Solan, Una, Kangra, Dharamsala, Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Chamba and Mandi.
