Shimla (Aug 20): The Communist Party of India-Marxist’s student wing Students Federation of India (SFI)) once again swept the student elections in the Himachal Pradesh University by a record margin this time. In a clean sweep, the SFI won 42 out of 44 seats of various department representatives and majority college elections in the capital town and major BJP dominated colleges in Kangra and Hamirpur.
Puneet Dhanta of SFI got 1202 votes for the post of president against 666 votes polled in favour of Deepak of ABVP and just 55 votes polled in favour of Naveen of Congress-backed NSUI. On the post of general secretary, Hoshiyar Singh of SFI won with a record margin of 676 votes. He got 1249 votes against 573 of ABVP and just 96 of NSUI. Lokinder Kumar and Manju Thakur of SFI won the posts of vice-president and joint secretary by a huge margins of 673 and 585 votes, informed Vijender Mehra, SFI state secretary.
“We had raised the issues of privatisation and commercialisation of higher education and got a massive response from the student community all over the state,” he said. The SFI has secured victory in Government College of Excellence, Shimla, Kotshera College, RKMV, Theog, Bhatiyat, Chowari, Jogindernagar, Sarkaghat, Bhatoli and Sujanpur Tihra. The ABVP won in major colleges in Mandi, Sirmaur and Solan districts while NSUI won in Una district of lower Himachal.
