CPIM condemns arrest of Anna Hazare; to hold protest demonstrations

SHimla (Aug 16): The Communist Party of India’s (Marxist) Himachal unit has condemns the arrest of Anna Hazare and ban on his hunger strike in Delhi and has decided to hold massive protest demonstrations tomorrow throughout the state against this “authoritarian” move.

“This is an attack on the democratic rights of citizens to protest peacefully. It shows how the Congress leadership is intolerant to any anti-corruption movement as their government is itself steeped in high-level corruption,” said a statement released by the state secretariat of the party today.

The CPIM has further stated, not just one but at least5 different types of Jan Lokpal bills are required in this country. These include: 1 The Rashtriya Jan Lokpal in whose ambit the PM should be brought alongwith all elected representatives and group A of the bureaucracy. 2 Kendriya Satarkta Lokpal or the Central Vigilance Commision, strengthening the institution to empower the CVC to investigate corruption and take appropriate action against mid-level bureaucracy. 3 Nyayapalika Lokpal (Judicial Standards and Accountability Lokpal): To strengthen the existing Judicial Accountability and Standards Bill, that is currently before the Parliament, to ensure that the judiciary is also made effectively and appropriately accountable, without compromising its independence from the executive or the integrity of its functions. 4 Shikayat Nivaran Lokpal (Public Grievances Lokpal): To set up an effective time-bound system for grievance redress for common citizens to make the government answerable in terms of its functions, duties, commitments and obligations towards citizens. 5 Lokrakshak Kanoon (Whistleblower Protection Lokpal): To strengthen the existing Public interest Disclosure and Protection to Persons Making the Disclosure Bill, that is currently before the Parliament,to ensure appropriate protection of whistleblowers.
