Shimla. Aug 10: In order to curb the increasing flow of traffic, causing pollution and congestion in Shimla, the local Municipal Corporation is planning to levy ‘green tax’ on entry of vehicles.
It would be the second hill town of the state after Manali, to impose such a tax on entry of vehicles coming from outside.
An official of MC Shimla told Himvani today that it was considering to impose a green tax to curtail increasing load of traffic by imposing entry tax on all tourists and other vehicles coming from outsides while local vehicles would be exempt from it.
MC was recently authorized by state assembly to impose taxes directly to generate income after amending Himachal Pradesh MC Act, which was also approved by the Governor recently. The MC official said that rate of green tax would be finalized in next meeting of house.
I am not sure about the amount of tax they talking about but 100 or 50 rupees is not going to deter people from driving into the town. Definitely the coffers would be richer but I can’t make sense how it is going to add to the greenness (maybe the color of the money).
