Shimla (July 28): Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) farmer wing would stage a protest in front of the Parliament during the monsoon session, seeking pro-farmer land acquisition in the countary.

BJP Kisan Morcha national leader OP Dhankhad told media persons here today that the party would stage a demonstration outside Parliament on August 3, demanding farmer-friendly land acquisition laws. The central government has announced that a bill amending the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, will be introduced in the monsoon session, that begins Aug 1.

“For the past seven to eight years, the purpose of acquisition of land has been changed from public purposes to obliging big industrial houses. The state governments have merely become the brokers of corporate houses,” he said. Dhankhad said the government should not act as facilitator for big industrial projects and the companies be asked to purchase land directly from the farmers.

“The proposed law should have a provision of an independent agency that should study the actual land required for a particular project. The new Act should be made a model act for the entire country,” the BJP leader said.

He demanded that the new law should clearly define the term “public interest” and the farmers whose land is acquired should be given profit and the acquisition must be done at market price.

  1. What about land and natural resources being given to power companies in “public interest” by the BJP govt in Himachal. Can Dhankhad start his protest from Shimla..
