Shimla: While addressing a press conference here today Deputy Commissioner Onkar Chand Sharma said that International Shimla Summer festival would begin on June 2 on the historic Ridge.
Prominent playback Bollywood singers/pop singers like Gurdas Man, Niladhari Devnath, Keka Ghosal, Swroop Khan, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Anand Raj Anand, besides laughter challenge artist Sudesh Lehri, Krishna have been invited, he said. This Rs50 lakh budget event would also include Himachal’s folk and culture programme to give platform to local artists and six troupes of local artists from schools. Individual artists will also be performing on the stage. Other attractions in the International Shimla Summer festival include baby show, flower show, food festival, dog show and painting exhibition.
The opening ceremony on June 2 would be inaugurated by Governor Urmila Singh, while the Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal would preside over the closing ceremony on June 6. The event will be free for all, as no entry tickets would be charged this time, but district administration would maintain law and order during the summer festival. Superintendent of Police Sonal Agnihotri said that more than 300 police personnel would be deployed to take care of the security arrangements and dog squad has also been included in the security arrangements. The Ridge area would be barricaded from 7.00 pm onwards and human traffic would not be allowed beyond Scandal Point towards the Ridge that would be accessible by the VIP and media only and movement of general public to the venue would be directed from the Mall.
Ridge would be placed under electronic surveillance with CCTV cameras installed at various places, extra patrolling would be undertaken to curb snatching cases, drunken revelry and there would be alcohol sensors on routers in the town, the defaulter would be caught and reprimanded. Besides, “Anti Gunda Cell” is being constituted with men in plain clothes covering up the entire town to keep a vigil on eve teasing.
Sadhna Ghanekar(actually a Konkani Brahmin) was renamed Sadhna SARGAM as her surname won’t be easily grasped by the localites on this very stage!
