Shimla (May 8): 56-year-old school teacher, Madhusudan, donated blood for the 100th time on International Thalassemia Day on Sunday at a blood donation camp, became the first woman in Shimla to achieve that feat. About 70 persons donated blood during the event organised by Umang foundation.

IGMC Shimla only has preliminary screening tests to check the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of blood among thalassemic kids, and confirmatory tests are only available at PGI Chandigarh, AIIMS and other big hospitals.
General secretary of Umang Foundation Yashwant Raj said thalassemic patients were a vulnerable section and there should be a separate ward for such children as they are prone to infections.
