Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government is in the process of amending the state Panchayati Raj Act to provide 50% reservation to women. The act will be amended during the budget session starting on 4th March.
“The Panchayati Raj Act will be amended in the budget session which begins on March 4. The amendment would provide 50 per cent reservation to women in the PRIs. At present 30 per cent reservation has been provided to women,” the spokesman said.
The amendment comes as a fulfillment of the promise made by BJP in its election manifesto, wherein it had promised to increase representation of women in the PRIs to 50 per cent after coming to power in the state.
Meanwhile, talking to the media persons in Shimla on Monday, In-charge of State Affairs of BJP Staya Pal Jain said that the BJP was also in the process of implementing the 33 per cent quota fixed for women in within the party structure that was decided in the National Executive meeting of the party held in January this year.
“A letter asking implementation of the provision was sent to the Himachal BJP by the central leadership of the party in February and the process of giving due representation to women in party’s frontal organisations to village level samitis will be completed in next three months. In this manner at least 15000 women will get an opportunity to represent the party at various levels across the state”, said Jain.
