Shimla (May 3): The 108-yr-old Kandaghat railway station, situated on the world heritage Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge railway line, was gutted last night as fire broke down after an electric short-circuit at the office building, which latter stretched into the entire compound, a senior official of Ambala Northern Railways told HimVani.

Pardeep Kumar Sangi, Divisional Railway Manger (DRM), who visited the spot this morning, told HimVani that the station, which was mostly made of wood, was destroyed completely, but officials living in the station were evacuated safely. He said a probe has been ordered by him to ascertained the cause of fire.

The fire broke out at 2.30 am and five fire tenders were deployed to douse the embers, but they could not save the structure. Movement of trains on the line was normal but officials of Kandaghat railway stations were seen sitting in the open on the platform doing their duty after the mishap.
