Hamirpur (April 17): Making a new beginning in ensuring equal social status and acceptance for the girl child, a teenaged girl lit the pyre of her deceased father here today.
Om Swaroop Sharma, 52, a driver with HRTC died due to cardiac arrest at a shop near petrol pump today. Since the deceased had no son, the family members decided to allow the eldest daughter, Shalini, aged 16, to perform the last rites.
Shalini lit the pyre of father and also performed other rituals in the presence of local ward councillor Anil Soni, BJP leader Vijay Pal Soharu and local philanthropist Hem Raj Chadha. The issue has become the talk of the town and people have started thinking on similar lines.
May God give Eternal peace to the departed soul and courage to the bereaved family!
Family has set a remarkable example to many people. Government must falicitate the daughters like Shalini to impress upon more people. Religious orthodoxy needs more such answers to reform itself from male dominated society. Core issues like this needs to be addressed effectively rather than delivering speeches on gender equality.
