Nahan (March 26): The National Schedule Caste Commission has sought action-taken report from Himachal Pradesh government within 15 days regarding the recent clashes between two communities at Paonta Sahib.
Briefing media persons here today, vice-chairman of the Commission Raj Kumar Verka took strong view against police arrangement and security measures, stating that they failed to avert a clash between the two group last Wednesday night during Holla Mohalla, which led to three persons being killed. He said that he had asked the chief secretary of Himachal Pradesh, Rajwant Sandhu, to submit action-taken report within 15 days, while the district adminstration has assured him to bring the situation to normal within four days.
Verka said that he had directed the chief secretary to provide compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh each to the injured along with free treatment. He said that if the government fails to provide jobs and sufficient compensations to the affected families, the Commission would pass a stricture against the government to flow its directions in the future.
Earlier he met with the members of the affected communities. He said that it was most unfortunate that no security was being provided to protect Dalit families whose houses were set on fire. He said that police have assured to put the culprits behind bar shortly. The state police has already suspended sub-inspector Dharm Pal and head constable Sant Ram for failing to do their duty, which led to the class.
