I’m going out with a clean image: Sat Mahajan

New Delhi: “When everyone wants you to be in politics, it’s the right time to retire,” Himachal’s octogenarian Congress stalwart, Sat Mahajan told HimVani, in an exclusive interview, here.

He said that even opposition leaders were surprised at his move and a very senior BJP leader (name suppressed on request) had told him that “it will be a big loss to politics.”

“I’m 81, and it’s the right age to retire.” So is it a signal for other leaders to pass on the baton to the younger generation? He disagreed. “It’s for everyone to decide for themselves. There have been politicians who are active at the age of 90 as well,” he said.

Asked, what his biggest achievement as a political leader was, Majhajan said, “I’m going out with a clean image. That’s my biggest achievement.”

Mahajan has passed on the baton to his son Ajay Mahajan, who’ll be contesting the elections in his place. Mahajan was in Delhi, along with other Congress leaders for a meeting with Congress High Command, Sonia Gandhi, to discuss the manifesto and the candidates for the upcoming elections.

Asked, whom he rated as the best minister or the MLA of the state, he gave all credit to “Rajaji”, the present Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Mahajan was sure that Congress would make a “comfortable win” in the state and refused to go into numbers and percentages.

He was also sure that the presence of the BSP too would work in the favour of the Congress.

He dismissed the rumours that Congress would not field candidates that had lost in the last elections. “We will pick up candidates who have the potential to win. Instead, we are relaxing many a rules,” he told HimVani.

He said that the biggest achievement of the Congress government was to work for the welfare of the “garib aadmi“. He noted that 40,000 daily wagers were regularised during the Congress regime.

Mahajan was seen carrying the copy of the ‘Model Code of Conduct’, in case he did “not default” on them. “We have to be very careful these days,” he said.

  1. Mr. Mahajan has been a respected leader throughout his life and no doubt he is going out with a high head.
While Mahajan my say that the party would only consider the winnability of the candiadte for giving hima ticket to contest, it is still to be seen that how is it applied in case of his son.
