Shimla: People belonging to four tribal panchayats of Nichar sub-division of Kinnaur district today boycotted the scheduled Gram Sabha meeting showing their resentment over upcoming 1000 MW Karcham Wangto Project in the region.

It was earlier reported that these four gram panchayats had boycottted recent PRI polls when not a single candidate had filed nomination in Urni, Youla, Chagoan and Miru gram-panchayats, protesting against alleged adamant attitude of the state government towards their long pending demand to cancel Karchham Wangtu project. While talking to UNI, gram-panchayat Chagoan president Anjana Negi said, “Inhabitants of agitating gram panchayat were opposing the Karchham Wangtu Hydro-electric project, as it was sanctioned without taking consent of the affected panchayats for which we have fought a long battle against the authorities, but they did not relent to their repeated requests.”

Terming the state government insensitive, she alleged that it did not even feel necessary to take panchayats’ no-objections certificates (NOCs) before allowing construction, despite their representatives having drawn the attention of government towards the devastating effects of the power project on the fragile ecology and life of the tribal. The tribal people also accused the state government of using force to suppress their voices and crush their movement.
