Lahaul Spiti administration fixes time to ply on Rohtang Pass

The Lahaul Spiti District Administration has fixed timings to ply on the 13050 feet high Rohtang Pass also called as gateway to Lahaul Spiti district to avert any eventuality of trapping citizens in the cold while crossing the fatal snow passes, senior officers confirmed.

 

The Deputy Commissioner Lahaul Spiti Mr. Vivek Bhatia said in a press statement issued recently that no vehicle would be allowed to cross Koksar toward Rohtang after 1500 hours in the evening moreover traffic could not permitted before 1000 hours in the morning. He said that expect emergency vehicles should be allowed to move on the passes prior taking permission either from Kullu or Lahaul District Administration till snowfall does not occur on it. He said that the police posts at Marhi near Manali and Kokasar toward Lahaul would continue to function till road become unfit for plying of vehicles with the onset of snowfall.

 

Meanwhile HRTC bus services were still plying in the icy cold region as the road is clear for traffic. Normally District Administration closes down the Rohtang Pass after Nov 15 every year, however it has been allowed to open this years till snowfall does not occur. The high reaches of Lahaul Spiti were covered by clouds, however there is no report of snowfall so far as the Rohtang Pass is reported mainly dry.

 

The cold waves have freezed entire Lahaul Spiti district as the night temperature is plunging to minus five to minus six at Lahaul Valley and minus eight to minus ten at Spiti valley. The minimum temperature of Keylong was minus 5.1 degree today and Kaza was at minus eight degrees. The tribal district remains cut off from the rest of world during the winters season after snowfall and people and patients were airlifted by helicopter in case of their holiday and emergency.

 

The Border Road Organization was constructing all weather tunnel in between Dhundi at South portal near Solang nalah of Manali to Sisoo at North Portal. The work of tunnel continues at 10,171 feet elevation whereas the Rohtang pass is at 13,051 feet elevation 51 km (32 mi) away from Manali. The pass receives heavy snowfall and blizzards during winter months and is open for road traffic for only four months in a year.
