HPMC carton factory may give way to engineering college

Shimla (Oct 13): Himachal Pradesh government is exploring the possibilities of setting  up an engineering college and one polytechnic in place of the ailing HPMC-run (Himachal Processing and Marketing Corporation) Rs-50 crore carton factory that was set up at Pragati Nagar in 20 years ago to discourage green felling for apples boxes.

The issue was taken up during a departmental meeting here today, which was presided over by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. It may be mentioned that the carton factory has remained in news ever since its inception with various political parties making different claims regarding its functioning. Lately, CPIM has been accusing the ruling party of trying to close the factory to benefit private carton manufacturers.

Dhumla said the state government was according high priority to vocationalise the traditional formal educational system and provide youth facility of demand-based vocational courses to help them find employment and self-employment avenues.

He said that polytechnics had been opened in seven districts of the state and remaining five districts would also get the same functional in coming two years. He said that a minimum of five courses would be made available to students from next academic session in polytechnics. He said additionally diploma courses in chemical and polymer engineering would also be started at Government Polytechnic, Sundernagar.

He said that construction work of Jawaharlal Nehru Government Engineering College was in progress at Sundernagar where BTech in chemical engineering course would be started from next session.
