Horticulture department promotes Picka nut cultivation

Dehra: Himachal Pradesh Horticulture department is promoting cultivation of ‘Picka nut’ in middle hills of Himachal Pradesh, as it is growing its nursery at Dehra, distributing seedlings to the interested farmers.

During three days “Bharat Nirman Jansuchana Abhiyan (Public Information Campaign) organised by Press Information Bureau Shimla, about 300 plants were given to progressive farmers showing keen interest in its cultivation. Extention Officer S.K.Gullari, showcasing the stall belong to HP Horticulture department told Himvani that the Picka Nut is like oblong-ed Kagaji wallnut without kernel inside it.

He said that nut was domesticated from the Tea garden valley, Palampur of Kangra district where it was being grown by the local people for centuries.  He said that one kilogram Picka Nutt fetches about Rs 450 to 500 per kilogram in the market. He informed that during the three day exhibition in the stall, they have sold about 500 seedlings of Picka nut and Bagubogosha (Pears) for Rs 2500 after convincing the farmers that the new strains of fruits could improve their economic conditions. He said that common/ local name of Picka Nut in Palampur belt is ‘Kagji akhrot’, while it is new strain for rest of the world which could be further propagated after finding its highly nutritive value and profitful propositions for the farmers. When Himvani contacted Vice Chancellor of Manava Bharati University, former Assistant Director of Dr. Y.S.Parmar Horticulture University S.P.Bhardwaj, he was of the opinion that Picka nut needs to be popularised among the farmers in the state.
