FIR against Tribune reporter: Shimla journalists held protest against FIR

The journalists in Shimla town staged a demonstration today to protest against the UIDAI’s decision to register a case against leading English daily The Tribune newspaper and one of Tribune reporter for exposing illegal data leak of Aadhaar details. The protest was organised on behalf of the Press Club of Shimla submitted a memorandum to President Dhananjay Sharma called on Governor Acharya Devvrat at Rajbhavan here and submitted a memorandum.

The Journalists termed government action unfair, unjustified and a direct attack on the freedom of the press, the registration of a case by Delhi Police against the Tribune reporter for publishing news regarding breach of secrecy of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) scheme.

It said the action of the UIDAI was uncalled for and the journalists would fight it out. After a January 3 report by The Tribune over the breach in Aadhaar data with a headline “Rs 500, 10 minutes, and you have access to billion Aadhaar details”, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UID AI) registered an FIR against the newspaper and the Tribune reporter Rachna Khaira.
