HP State declares holiday for woman on Karva Chauth

‘Karva Chauth’ considered auspicious among people in North India was observed today as Hindu wives took absolute vows not sipping even drop of water before dawn till offering pooja in the evening. The State Government has declared special holiday for women staff in the state moreover Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Cooperation was also offering free travel to all women as more than nine lakh women travel in HRTC fleet daily.

 

HRTC normally offers 30 percent discount on traveling of fair sex in its 2300 fleet of buses daily however it was complete free travel if claimed by woman or girl in its intrastate services, Official of HRTC said. Normally HRTC did not offer free travel to women expect on Raksha bandhan and Bhaiya dooj however it was notified to offer free holiday today as it was announced by Transport Minister G.S Bali while interacting with media persons today.

 

In the occasion of ‘Karva Chauth’ all those who have taken vows would appear outside in large congregation at The Ridge ground at Shimla and other prominent public places in State to offer pooja soon after moon rise this evening. The Director of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Mr. Dinesh Malhotra said that Himachal Pradesh tourism offered discount to the woman in its all hotel units and provided the all arrangement and material required for offering Karva Chauth Pooja.

 

Karva Chauth is a religious festival that falls on 4th lunar day of the Hindu calender in Kartik month. Day before the vows, women in the State remained busy for shopping for Karva Chauth pooja material and to observe the fast which comes once in the year. Woman also recite the Karva Chauth Pooja Katha to appease the Goddess on this occasion praying for long life of their male partners and husbands. Mostly newly married couples come out  from their houses with attractive attire to offer Pooja which was followed in ritualistic way in most part of North India.

 

Married women and women reaching marriageable age traditionally fast throughout the day from sunrise till the moon rise. On this day, they worship Shiva, Ganesha, Karthikeya, Parvati and also pay offerings to the moon. The one-day festival is mainly observed in Indian states like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
