HP High Court cautions for rampant illegal mining

The Himachal Pradesh High Court once again cautioned its officers to be ready to face the action if they keep illegal mining uncontrolled despite having made several warning in the past. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mr. Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Sandeep Sharma observed in a public interest litigation petitioned hearing today that it would have already passed order to control the illegal mining in the state.

 

The court converted this matter suo-moto PIL petition on the basis of a news item published in local English daily recently. “If illegal mining remained uncontrolled in the State, then in the case it would affix its responsibility on all the concerned officers including DGP of take may be held responsible” the court said while hearing the matter.

 

The HP High Court also directed the State Geologist to remain present in person before the court on Sep 29, 2016. “Roads constructed by mining mafia dismantled”. It was reported in the news that the SDM, Palampur had received complaints from the residents of Sulaha area that illegal mining was going on unchecked in Neugal River near Paror at Palampur. Which is damaging local paths, water channels, road and cremation ground.

 

It was further reported that the illegal mining was not only resulting in large-scale environmental degradation but also causing loss to the state exchequer as the mining material was being lifted without paying royalty to the State Government. The construction and querying once contributes about 25 percent to the state GDP caused kaleidoscopic damage to the environment and state coffer as illegal mining taking place under the cover of local politicians and high placed government functionaries.
