Panic among people after frequent tremors in HP

    People living in Anni subdivision of Kullu and Rampur of Shimla districts are in panic as frequent six to seven tremors were experienced in the areas in the last 24 hours. An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale felt in parts of Himachal Pradesh this morning, leaving the people panic-stricken as they had to rush out from their homes in Shimla and Kullu districts.

    There are report that the District Administration Shimla declared off in the all schools and people have been asked to remain alert. There are reports that some old buildings have developed fissures however no report of loss of life or major damage is there. The tremors were experienced at 0646hrs having epicenter at Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh at Latitude of 31.4 degree North  & Longitude of  77.5 degree East and Depth 10 Km. The aftershocks of 4.3 and 4.2 magnitudes were recorded at 0705 hrs and 0900 hrs respectively.

    Educational institutes and schools were closed as precaution, said Rampur Sub Divisional Magistrate Nishant Thakur. He added tents have been provided in open places for people unwilling to return to their houses. Some old buildings in Ani area of Kullu, Kingal and Kumarsein developed cracks. Reports of boulders rolling down from hills have been reported from interior areas of Rampur and Kullu, said officials.

    People avoided going to office after the tremors, which were felt in Shimla, Solan, Chopal and parts of Sirmaur district. The tremors have also increased the risk of landslides with monsoon rains loosening soil. District administration officials in Kullu and Shimla also said no loss of life or property has been reported.
