Shortages of teachers in HP university; HP HC seeks issue notice

The Himachal Pradesh High Court today issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Secretary (Education) Government of Himachal Pradesh and Registrar, Himachal Pradesh, Shimla in a matter regarding the paucity of teaching faculty in Himachal Pradesh University.

The Court further directed the respondents to file status report within two weeks in this matter. The matter would be now listed before the court on 22nd August, 2016 for further hearing.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan passed these orders on a petition taken up suo moto by the Court as Public Interest Litigation on a news item published in the daily newspaper “Punjab Kesari” on 12th July, 2016 Under the title “हिमाचल प्रदेश में चल रही शिक्षकों की कमी”.

It was reported in the news item that almost in every department the admission process for the academic session 2016-17 is about to complete, but the appointment of teachers has not been done till now. It was also reported that there are only 5 teachers in the Law Department, whereas, the total strength of the students is 500 in the department. At present 11 post are lying vacant in the department. Since 2000 no appointment has been made in the Law Department.

In the Department of Education which is the second biggest department there are 15 posts of teachers which are lying vacant. Even the High Court has directed the University time and again to fill up the vacant posts of teaches, but no action has been taken by the University till today.
