The Opposition stages walkout on jaundice issue

    The Opposition BJP today staged the walkout on the issue of jaundice protesting the reply of Irrigation and Public Health Minister Ms. Vidya Stokes after 3 hours debate in the Legislative Assembly today.

    Chief Minister Mr. Virbhadra Singh said there is jaundice outbreak in the State. However, opposition was trying to create panic after blowing the issue. He said that efforts were being done to give respite the people as hundreds of cases were reported from all parts of the State.

    Replying to debate Health Minister Mr. Kaul Singh Thakur said that the State Government was taking responsibility of the outbreak and efforts are being made to provide free treatments. Mr. Thakur said that he had visited the affected water supply and found that it contaminated the drinking water supply which has been stopped to Shimla and Solan.

    IPH minister Ms. Vidya Stokes also made a short reply and stated that 1563 people have been affected in Shimla town and 536 people in Solan. She said that she also visited the spot however the responsibility of negligence also comes on both Congress and BJP Government. However, the BJP member staged the walkout from the house over this remark.

    The leader of Opposition Mr. Prem Kumar Dhumal said that jaundice outbreak is a serious issue. He said that efforts should be made that all sewerage treatment function normally and funds should be allotted to ensure that it runs without causing such disasters. Mr. Dhumal charged that many HIMUDA colonies were not linked with the Municipal Sewerage System as only 30 percent of houses were only connected with the Sewerage Treatment Plants.
