Urmila Singh demits office of Himachal Pradesh Government

Ms. Urmila Singh today demitted her office as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.  She was given a formal departure at Raj Bhawan in the presence of Chief Minister and other cabinet members of the Congress government. Later Ms. Singh gave at home reception to the prominent citizens and media persons at the historic Raj Bhawan where she was given the guard of honor by the Raj Bhawan security guards before her departure.

Rajasthan Governor Mr. Kalyan Singh who has been given the additional charge of Himachal Pradesh on January 24, 2015 would now replace Ms. Singh. Former Governor of Nagaland and CBI director, Mr. Ashwani Sharma also attended the farewell function and Mr. Virbhadra Singh state Chief Minister thanked the demitting Governor for her services to this hill state and wishing for her bright future on her next assignment.

Ms. Singh who is a tribal leader of Madhya Pradesh is likely to return to state politics as Congress high command wants her back in the party fold after serving as Himachal Pradesh Governor. Urmila Singh was among those few Congress designated Governors who were not removed by the Prime Minister after resuming to power in the center.

Ms Urmila Singh who hails from Chhatisgarh, has served as Minister of State for Dairy Development (1993-95) and as Cabinet Minister for Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare (1998-2003). She has also served as the President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, a party forum, between 1996 and 1998. The new state of Chhatisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2001,and Urmila’s constituency now falls in the portion of  new state. Ms. Singh has also served as a member of the first ever legislative assembly of Chhatisgarh between 2001 and 2003
