Water level on rise in Beas river; Administration bans water-rafting & para-gliding

Taking safety measures with alarming heavy monsoon condition and swelling of Beas and its tributaries, district administration Kullu today sounded high alert along it putting embargo on the river-rafting and para-gliding for the time being, concerned official revealed.

Manali tourism development officer Mr. Ashwani Sharma told media persons that all kind of river rafting on the Beas river in the district and paragliding near Solang nalah and other places in the district have
been suspended til September 15 from today onwards with the swelling of water level.

He said that level of Beas river is suddenly rising up due to thawing of glaciers and heavy rainfall in the district and district administration clamped a ban on adventurous sports like paragliding and river rafting.

Moreover, Indian Meteorological Department issued warning of heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over low and mid hills of the state, the level of water streams would also rise further.

Una registered 140 mm rainfall in the state, Renuka in Sirmaur district 127 mm, Sikh shrine city Paonta Sahib 110 mm, Sangrah 70 mm and Nahan 62 mm.

Rainfall also lashed Bangana in Una district an recorded 42 mm, Amb 41 mm, Palampur in Kangra district 39 mm, Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district 37 mm, Rampur in Shimla district 36 mm, Nadaun in Hamirpur district 35 mm, Gaggal in Kangra district 32 mm, Gohar in Mandi district 26 mm and Saluni in Chamba district 24 mm.

No report of loss of life and property is from anywhere in the state but it affected movement of traffic and erratic power supply. With activation of south-west monsoon, people and students experienced braving rain showers in the capital town.

The visibility is very low as thick clouds and fog were hovering in the sky, which also brought frequent spell of rain in this capital town reducing the number of tourists and local in the market places.

The minimum and maximum temperature is unchanged in the state. The Met. office forecast moderate to rather heavy rainfall in the mid and foothills and light rainfall at few places in the high reaches in next 24 hours.
