High reaches experencing heavy snowfall in Himachal; insistent rain lashed downstreams

Fury of rain and snowfall is continue in this hill state as heavy snowfall occurred on high reaches and widespread insistent rain lashed many parts in the down streams from last 24 hours, disrupting normal life.

Vehicular traffic and power supply disrupted by the heavy snowfall on the high reaches as Narkanda and Kharapather got 25 cm fresh snowfall each and Kufri, Fagu, Shalli temple, Mashobra experienced 10 cm fresh snowfall.

After mounting of snow on Hindustan Tibet Road, vehicular traffic is disrupted at Narkanda and Kufri while it was open upto Theog after clearing snow. In tribal districts life is grim as cold wave and snowfall cut off the entire tribal district by road or air.

Headquarters of Lahaul & Spiti district, Keylong got 32 cm snowfall (near one feet) followed by Bharmaur in Chamba district 10 cm, Moorang and Kalpa in Kinnaur district 7 cm each.

High mountain ranges like 13050 feet high Rohtang Pass in Lahaul & Spiti, Kinnaur and Shrikhand Kailash of Kinnaur, Baralacha and Manimahesh of Chamba district, Churdhar of Shimla district, Sirmaur and Dhauladhar ranges of Kangra district recorded heavy to very heavy snowfall. As a result, threat of avalanches is looming high.

Since yesterday widespread rainfall lashed the region along with high speed winds.

Jubbal in Shimla district got highest 60 mm rainfall, Manali 48 mm, Tissa in Chamba district 47 mm, Kheri 45 mm, Saluni 37 mm, Kotkhai in Shimla district 36 mm, this capital town 35 mm, Kandaghat in Solan district 32 mm, Baldwara in Mandi district 30 mm, Karsog 28 mm, Solan 26 mm, Kasauli 25 mm, Rajgarh, Dharampur of Mandi district and Sunni Bhajji of Shimla district 24 mm each.

Minimum temperature of Bharmaur was minus 10 degrees Celsius, Keylong minus 4.7 degrees, Kalpa and Manali minus 1 degrees, Dalhousie at 1.4 degrees, Shimla 2.2 degrees and Nahan in Sirmaur district 5 degrees.

People who came out of their houses for working places and students to schools have brave cold winds and rain this morning. However, tourists from plains were still enjoying snowfall in tourist resorts in large number.

The prolonged winter and chilling would affect the flower setting in the high and middle hills in fruit crops especially apple if weather conditions would not improve, an agriculture expert said. Ripping Ravi crop in plains could be spoiled with more rain and inclement weather conditions.

Bhuntar in Kullu district and Solan was low at 6 degrees, Dharamshala and Palampur at 7 degrees each, Sundernagar in Mandi district and Chamba 8 degrees each, Una 9 degrees, Kangra and Hamirpur 10 degrees each and Bilaspur 13 degrees.

The inclement weather is continue in the state today and Met office forecast rain or snowfall at isolated parts of middle and high reaches in next 24 hours but it would be mainly dry in the foothills tomorrow.
