Non-availability of emergency flights from snowbound areas

Congress before coming to power in the state promised to provide emergency chopper flights on subsidized fares and it started on 3 January last year. But after one year in the rule it has forgotten its promise. The month of February is coming but it is so far not interested to give chopper flights normally used by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Governor Urmila Singh.

The Government officials accepted the non-availability of flights forcing the people to remain in the grim situations as Rohtang Pass and Kunzum pass had been blocked in the month of December which links Lahaul and Spiti valleys respectively.

Chopper had been used once by the government to evacuate people on December 23 and 24 when first snowfall occurred in this season. After heavy snowfall it was used to evacuate five people who were trapped on the way to Rohtang, out of which two were brought dead and three alive.

Snow vagaries were still causing trouble to the people of the snowbound areas in rest of the state as one killed and three injured at Kaltu Nalaha in Kotkhai in the evening, day before yesterday as the car skidded off the snowy road and fell 100 feet down.

Meanwhile, the national highway 22 has been opened for vehicular traffic today and the HRTC buses have been running on the roads after clearing snow at tourist resorts like Narkanda, Kharapathar, Chopal and Jubbal Kotkhai. HRTC officials told that the buses have been sent to Rohru, Jubbal and Kotkhai. Meanwhile Narkanda was opened at night, day before yesterday.

After snowfall on January 18, 2014 all these roads were snowbound. Meanwhile, NH-22 is already opened in the Kinnaur district.
