HC slaps notice for non-compliance of HC order to Markandeya shrine trust

Himachal Pradesh High Court today slapped notice of contempt of court to government trust, who look after the affairs of Markandeya shrine in Bilaspur district of the state.

The notice have been issued to Dr. Ajay Sharma (D.C. Bilaspur), Mr. Kapil Sharma (S.P. Bilaspur) Mr. M.L. Mehta (SDM Bilaspur) and also to the Chairman of the Management Committee of Markandeya Temple, Bilaspur for their failure to ensure compliance of the orders of the high court in a Public Interest Litigation.

The Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir and Justice Kuldip Singh passed these orders on a contempt petition taken up by the court suo moto, on a letter written by Mr. S.R. Harnot, a writer and president of Himalaya Sahitya, Sanskriti avm Paryavaran Manch, Shimla to the Chief Justice complaining of a notice board put up at Sanyasi temple above Markandeya Temple, Bilaspur barring entry of Dalits in the shrine complex.

Earlier also, the high court had taken cognizance of a news report regarding putting up of such notice outside the temple and treated the same as PIL, while directing the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police Bilaspur and the Chairman, Maharishi Markandeya Temple management Committee to ensure that no such board should be displayed in the precincts of the temple in future.

The board was removed and a case was also registered against accused Baba Kewal Puri in this regard, but the board again came up.

The court has fixed next date of hearing on this matter for February 25, 2014
