Prices of vegetables are going up in Shimla

The prices of daily eatable vegetables in Himachal Pradesh is currently soaring up following huge mismatch between demand and supply, moreover forthcoming tourists season aggravate this problem further.

A manager of private restaurant said that retail prices of potato is Rs. 40 per kg in Shimla town, green pea Rs. 70 per kg and tomato Rs. 45 per kg

“We could not compromise with quality of vegetables which is also soaring high like onion which is between Rs. 60 to 70 per kg and had already crossed Rs. 100 per kg in the town”, Mr. Basudev local businessman said.

He said that people were forced to purchase second grade potato as ‘Pahari aloo’ (local crop) which was costing Rs. 35 to Rs. 40 per kg in this capital town.

With advent of snowfall and winter season soon, the supply of essential vegetables would also mismatched is likely to escalate the prices of fruit and vegetable in the market further.

Other vegetables especially green spinach, coriander and french beans are already being sold at Rs. 60 to 70 in the retail. The supply of green pea and potato is coming from tribal district Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur would hamper as the high reaches received snowfall 15 days earlier of normal winters.

The tomato produce in the low lying areas is also dwindling as crop is going to end soon in Solan and Shimla district. The town will have winter tourists rush soon which is likely to soar up the demands of vegetables.

Shimla town houses more than 450 hotel units, most of them have their own catering which gives competition to the local people who have to purchase the essential items on exorbitant prices and it would be more worse due to swelling of tourists footfall in the town.

During the peak season this capital town recorded 1.50 lakh tourists and floating population in the town.
