Rain caused havoc in the state

As the south west monsoon is receding in the state,  weather toll is mounting up in Himachal Pradesh, one person killed as he got hit by falling tree uprooted after thunderstorm last evening.

Suresh Chand (27) working as painter with ARTRAC here was killed as heavy tree came over him and he died on the spot.

A fallen tree disrupted NH 21 and NH 88 at several places in Dhami, Bilaspur, Una and Hamirpur. Fallen tree also disrupted movement of traffic on many roads in the outskirts of Shimla.

Power supply remained off in Northern grid from 1930 to 2030 hours as Kunihar substation had to shut down after thunderstorm hit the areas. With this, death toll in weather related mishaps mounted upto 70 in the state.

Shimla town received heavy rainfall which lasted for three hours, plunging down the minimum temperature, a Met official said .

While Manali witnessed light rains, other hill stations, including Kasauli, Dharamshala, Palampur and Kangra, saw thundershowers. Kufri and Narkanda also experienced moderate rain on Sunday evening, the official said.

Manali town, which saw a low in temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius on Monday, experienced 5.2 mm of rain. The night temperature was recorded as 11 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Kangra town, experienced 21.2 mm of rain, the highest in the state. Sundernagar and Keylong saw 7.8 mm and 1 mm rain respectively.

Shimla, which experienced 4.6 mm rain, saw a low of 10.6 degrees Celsius, a fall from Sunday’s 15 degrees Celsius.

Hills overlooking the picturesque tourist destinations of Chitkul, a village close to the China border, in Kinnaur district and the majestic Rohtang Pass (13,050 feet), located 52 km from Manali, saw light snow, according to reports.
