69,000 monkeys sterilized in HP; number comes down by 55,000

Himachal Pradesh Government today claimed in the state assembly that the number of monkeys have reduced significantly in the state following sterilization of 69000 monkeys.

During the question hours in assembly today, Forest Minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri informed that according to the census conducted in June 2013 in the state, 2,26,086 monkeys were counted. He said that in earlier census conducted in 2004, the number was 3,17,112. He said that figures show that number of monkeys came down by 55000 as more than 69000 monkeys have been sterilized in the state.

Maheshwar Singh (Kullu-HLP) alleged that the state government was giving different figures of monkeys as a difference in the facts given by the Ministers and officers concerned appeared in the section of press.

Speaker Brij Behari Butail sought serious action and said that monkeys proportion was causing alarming losses to peasantry and panicking the people and a policy is required for this. He said that the state government has started the process to set up monkey parks in the forest areas. The monkeys after sterilization would be kept in these parks.

“Till date five places near Todpur in Nahan, Haripur in Chamba, Slori in Churah, Bassa Farkunda in Nurpur and Simbalbada have been identified to set up monkey’s parks. Similarly the process to identify other places in the state to set up such type of parks is in progress,” he added.

Forest Minister said that state government has set up three new monkey sterilization centres at Paonta Sahib (Sirmaur), Sarol (Chamba) and Salapad ( Mandi) in the period between January 1, 2013 to July 31, 2013. The state government even has appointed veterinary doctors, pharmacists and the process to appoint animal attendants is in progress,” he added. He said that state government has laid the foundation stone of new Monkey Sterilization Centre at Khekhar Kania Nala ( Sainj) in Kotgarh forest division and another site at Ishpur in Una has been identified for the same.

Latter Jai Ram Thakur (Seeraj-BJP) raised the supplementary that a college student and daughter of Promila Devi (divorcee), fell from the fourth floor in Mandi in Monkey menace. He said that government has given just Rs. 50,000 to the victim whereas she requires immediate medical assistance of worth Rs. 8 lakhs for transplantation of her hind limbs at PGI.

Minister said that government would provide free treatment to girl who lost her vision and both hind limbs in the incident who is now undergoing treatment at PGI Chandigarh.

Minister said that he would consider the matter as a special case and provide all possible assistance to the affected. He said that victim was on the rooftop when a monkey frighted her and in panic she jumped down from losing her eye sight and hind limbs.
