9 died whereas 54 injured in bus mishap

9 persons killed including two women and son of former minister while 54 others injured when an over crowded state transport bus going to Pehlog from Shimla skidded off the road in Shimla district yesterday afternoon, senior officer of district administration said.

Deputy Commissioner Shimla, Mr. Dinesh Malhotra said that an ill-fated bus enroute to Pehlog from Shimla fell down at 1630 hours near Dhawas Nokoda telephone exchange 20 km away from Chaupal and 120 km from Shimla killing 5 on the spot while 4 persons succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital rest 45 injured have been admitted at government hospital Chaupal and serious among them were referred to IGMC hospital Shimla.

Preliminary reports said that deceased include residents of Nerva and Pehlog villages. Two women and a man from Uttarakhand and Bihar also died in the mishap.

Identified deceased are Bhagat Ram resident of Budhi Nerwa village, Indra resident of Berag village, Ranjeet Singh resident of Bihar, Balvir resident of Gomol village under Chamoli area of Uttarakhand and Bhulma Devi of Kandal Newal village of Tikar area of Chopal, Jalam Singh Resident of Harog, Manmohan Ranta of Shak village, Jagdish of village Makoda Pandal, Ravinder Sankhyan son of former minister Daulat Ram Sankhyan of Jukhala Bilaspur district.

Two persons including Driver of bus Karnail Singh who is reported in coma and Vikrant Sankhyan son of deceased Ravinder Sankhyan is reported critical both were referred to IGMC.

Two deceased succumbed on the way to hospital while two other died in the hospital. Accident occurred when driver lost control over the 42 seater vehicle as the area was foggy and it was raining heavily. The rescue operation delayed due to inclement weather and remote spot.  The bus fell 150 mts. down the road. All the bodies were retrieved and are to be handed over today to their relatives after postmortem

State government ordered magistrate probe to ascertain the cause of the accident.
