About 14,500 feet high Kunzum Pass which links Spiti valley of Lahaul and Spiti district has been thrown open by Border Road Organizations for light vehicles after deploying heavy machinery on the pass. It has been snowbound since 15 October 2012.

Talking to ADC cum SDM of Spiti, Rahul Chauhan said that after long toil the BRO personnel succeeded to throw the lofty pass open for terrestrial communication as snow was cleared on the pass yesterday throwing it open for light vehicles and it would be open for heavy vehicles shortly.

He said that road was cleared after removing about 15 feet high snow layer last evening. The deserted Kaza town suddenly turned prolific after paving the way of hundreds of light vehicles which arrived there. Before this, rarest helicopter sorties were only communication to the valley.

After excessive rainfall on 16, June 2013 the only road link with this valley has snapped apart when Kaza-Reckong-Peo road has been disrupted by the landslides and rolling down of boulders on the road.

Spiti valley also known as land of ‘Budh Gompa’ is about 171 km from world tourist destination Manali, the only bus service which runs on this road between Tabo to Kullu is to be started soon, official informed.

No direct bus service run between Lahaul and Spiti valley as the two valleys joined at Gramphu near 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass.
