Strongly dismissing any move to scuttle incumbent Congress government in the state, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh termed the resignation submitted by his cabinet rank minister as political manoeuvrings  to change his portfolios.

After returning from Delhi here in Shimla, octogenarian Congress leader was replying to media queries over reported resignation of Mr. Bali. “I have no information about his resignation but I think it’s political manoeuvrings for changing the portfolios,” he said.

Party sources said Bali was allegedly unhappy with his portfolios and he submitted his resignation to party central leaders.

“I have allotted portfolios by keeping in mind the capabilities and experience of a minister. He (Bali) has been allotted two important portfolios (Transport and Civil Supplies)”, the chief minister said.

He said even state’s party in-charge Virender Singh Chaudhary has no information about the resignation. “As per my information, he has submitted his resignation to Ahmed Patel (political secretary of Sonia Gandhi) but he got no intimation from the high command,” he said.

“I hope good sense will prevail and he will withdraw his resignation,” the chief minister said, adding “there is no move to change portfolios”.

But Mr. Bali refused to comment on his resignation. “I am happy with my portfolios and never asked the chief minister for change of portfolios. I am going on a holiday”, he told reporters in Shimla.

On the other hand Senior Congress leader and Health Minister Mr. Kaul Singh Thakur dismissed speculation about his resignation. “I am a responsible party leader and obey Congress high command directions”, Mr. Thakur said not commenting over Mr. Bali’s resignation.

Senior Congress leader and Horticulture Minister, Mrs. Vidya Stokes said that Mr. Bali’s action was taken in the personal raged but he would soon return back to party fold and join his job.

Meanwhile there are strong signals in the political arena of state that there is absolute threat to the health of present government as serious difference prevailed on account of loyalty, disbelief and discontentment against the present congress leadership, political expert said.

  1. The strength of democracy is freedom of expression. People have guts and space to express their feelings and convey feedback; and popular leaders should take feedback from citizens and convey to higher ups; else after five years the resentment boils over and governments topple. It is good that timely communication strengthens democracy and development.
