Fish farming is emerging as booming industry in Himachal Pradesh

Fish farming is emerging as booming industrial activity in this hill state as it has immense potential to rear fishes in various water bodies and people are coming forward in large number to adopt this vocation.

This was stated by Fishery Minister Thakur Singh Bharmouri while replying to query of Asha Kumari in the assembly today. He said that Trout breeding farming Bhandal on Suel Khud of Chamba is to be developed as Trout rearing center. He added that an official panel would be constituted to find out the way to make this center viable while department is already sawing the seedlings in the rivulets to promote and attract the people for fish farming. He also said that center could be relocated if it could not be revived at the existing place.

Maheshwar Singh sought that on the analogy of West Bengal, fish farming should be declared as ‘Agricultural activity’ as it would benefit the people who are engaged in this vocation as they would become entitled for low interest rate loan.

Minister said that government would give thought over the suggestions given by other members, however, fishery is already booming up as major industrial activities in this hill state.

In written reply to another query minister said that fishery recorded Rs. 50.26 crore business in the state after registering 7574.70 tonnes fish production during last financial year 2012-13 .

Kangra district registered fishery production of 2,581 tonnes with turnout of Rs. 14.65 crore and followed by Bilaspur with 1517.33 tones and Rs. 8.31 crore during last financial year, Minister said.

He said that this vocation is rendering livelihood of about 4538 households as 2094 families are engaged in Govindsagar in Bilaspur and Una district, 2303 in Pong dam in Kangra, 118 in Chamera and 23 in Ranjeet Sagar dam in Chamba. However, about 45 registered co-operative societies are functioning in the state.

  1. i am retired bank officer having agricultural graduation .now i am interested in fish farming at holi of chamba distt. but i am resident of of distt kangra can i start my farming of fishi culture
