NCB officer arrested on bribery charges in Mandi

Himachal  police arrested an official of the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) posted in Mandi town. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs.1,10,000 from the kin of an accused booked under the NDPS Act.

NCB intelligence officer, Arvind Sharma was arrested on Tuesday night for accepting the bribe, Superintendent of Police (Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau) Mr. Varinder Sharma told the reporters in Mandi. He also said that Mr. Sharma was produced in the local court on Wednesday, and was remanded to police custody for three days.

It is alleged that the accused was demanding Rs.1,50,000 but after negotiations agreed to accept Rs. 1,10,000 from a kin of a prisoner lodged in a jail in Mandi for smuggling of narcotics. The NCB Chandigarh has set up its center in Mandi to check illegal cultivation of poppy and cannabis in the state. In the past two years NCB had trapped many smugglers in the state, especially in the Kullu Valley, who were engaged in this illegal activity.

Sources said that NCB’s zonal office in Chandigarh has dismissed its officer and separate departmental inquiry has been initiated against its officer.
