Umang Foundation, a public welfare trust, launched ‘Thalassemia Free Himachal’ campaign to mark International Thalassemia Day and urged the government to extend all benefits to Thalassemic persons that are given to the persons with disability. A blood donation camp was also organized in which children with Thalassemia released a poster to create awareness about this genetic blood disorder.

Chairman of Umang Foundation, Ajai Srivastava told that the poster gives information about the preventive measures against the spread of Thalassemia and also appeals o the people to donate blood for these children. Pre-marital blood test can play a significant role in its prevention. The Thalassemic children inaugurated the blood donation camp by honoring the donors with a rose stick.

Ajai Srivastava said that their demands of a special ward for the children with Thalassemia in Indira Gandhi Medical College and free medicines for Thalassemic patients were fulfilled by the Chief Minister last year, which proved to be a great relief for the poor patients. He also said that these patients must get all the facilities and benefits that are given to the disabled including reservation in education and employment because these patients totally depend on other’s blood and are very weak.

The main objective of the Thalassemia Free Himachal campaign is to create awareness in the society and government. He emphasized on the need to conduct a state wide survey to know the number of Thalassemia patients. On this occasion, apart from local social activists, Thalassemic children and their parents from Karsog, Theog, Kumar Sen, Rajgarh, Bilaspur and Hamirpur were also present.
