25 Lakh high yielding apple strains replace senile rootstock in HP

Shimla, Nov 13:  As many 25.34 lakh high quality apple saplings have been transplanted in this hill state, replacing senile rootstock and cankered trees, benefiting small and marginal growers.

Highlighting about the progress of Rs 85 Crore Horticulture Technology Mission scheme in the state, Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Minister Narender Bragta said that about 25000 high yielding US strains apple saplings had been distributed to farmers on the subsidized rates. He said that high yielding and better quality certified fruit plants were being distributed to farmers besides 50 percent subsidy being provided to the growers wanting to purchase the agricultural equipments and related machinery. This scheme that is being funded by the center is being used mainly for apple re-plantation project  and to facilitate the availability of high quality apple and others fruits saplings in each plantation season

“The novel project is to continue for span of span five years and is now targeting to replace 12.50 lakh old and cankered trees with high
quality 29,12000 root stock in 5000 hectare area.” Narender Bragta informed. The Mission funds were used to modernize state run fruit nurseries in the state. Nurseries providing certified root stocks to farmers are Himachal Pradesh Y.S.Parmar Horticulture University Nauni in Solan, its unit at Dadahu in Hamirpur, Horticulture research center Mashobara in Shimla and Patlikuhl in Kullu. Fruits plants were being made available at respective development block through horticulture development officers in state.
