Statewide protest by farmers in Himachal

Shimla: On the call of Himachal Pradesh Kissan Sabha (HPKS), farmers at 20 places lodged protest over their long-pending demands.
There were reports of agitations from Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Solan, Hamirpur, Una and Bhavanagar towns in front of the vegetable markets .

The farmers have also submitted a memorandum, demanding 20-points program addressed to Chief Minister Prem Kumar. Hundreds of farmers from various gram panchyats gathered at APMC market yard at Dhali to press for their demands and submitted demand charters to APMC Cairman Gayan Chandel.

Onkar Shed general secretary of HKS said that APMC president assured the protesting farmers that all commission agents outlets would be supplied with new electronic weighing machines by November 5, 2011 and commission agents not replacing traditional weighing machines with digital ones would be dealt with sternly and even cancelling the license of commission agents.

APMC Dhali also agreed to display its order to not deduct 2 kg from the vegetable produce while weighing the crop in markets. APMC assured to constitute a committee, which would submit its report to fix and rationalize labour charges in the market, which was earlier charged from farmers. HKS claimed that farmers would get benefit of Rs 20 crore annually if electronic weighing machines and no deduction of 2kg from produce is enforced strictly.
