Scrub typhus cases mount to 402; toll 17

Shimla (Sep 25): The number of Scrub typhus cases in Himachal have gone up to 402 while the number of deaths have risen to 17, even as new patients continue to pour in hospitals across the state.

Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital registered 16 fresh cases yesterday. A hospital spokesman stated that 975 blood samples have been collected so far and 402 were found positive for the mysterious disease. Scrub typhus spread through a mite and is generally seen in women who go out to cut grass in the Monsoon season. The cases show sudden rises after mid of Monsoon and patients complaint of high fever, severe headache, and rashes. Patients treated with antibiotics typically recover within 48 hours of starting therapy. If it goes untreated it can cause complications and even death.
