HP considering labour wages on the basis of price index

Shimla (July 28): Himachal Pradesh government will constitute a committee to fix minimum labour wages on the basis of Consumer Price Index emulated by Delhi and other states.

A day after the government was pulled up by Himachal Pradesh High Court for failing to ensure the safety to eight labourers engaged in Rohtang Tunnel work, who died due to cloudburst at Manali recently, Himachal Pradesh employment and labour minister Kishan Kappor disclosed this while presiding the State Labour Minimum Wage Advisory Board meeting here today. The ministry informed in the meeting that the state government has taken landmark steps for the welfare of working class after increasing the minimum wage of skilled labour from Rs 75 to Rs 120 ensuring annual benefits of Rs 16,425 to them.

He claimed that 2,59,480 labourers were registered with the labour department after issuing them I-cards while it has fixed minimum wages on the higher side for labourers working in life-threatening conditions like hydropower, tunnel work and far-flung areas.

He said that Wage to labour engaged in hydropower project has been fixed by 25 percent higher than minimum wage while it is 20 PC higher for those engaged in executing tunnels and 10 percent higher for those working in tribal areas.

Kapoor also informed that steps have been taken to provide the shelters to the workers engaged in organized and unorganized sectors as Two labour hostels having capacity of 950 each, separate for men and women were coming up in industrial hub Baddi with an estimated cost of Rs 23 crore.
