Rafting & paragliding ban in Kullu and Manali

Manali (July 20): In the wake of rising water level in Beas river and
prevailing rough weather condition in the state, the district administration in Kullu has banned rafting at Kullu and paragliding activities in Manali till September 15, 2011, to ensure the safety of people with immediate effect.

District tourism development officer-cum-Sub divisional officer, Manali,
Balbir Thakur told HimVani over phone that clamping HP rafting & paragliding rule-2005, all rafting bases being set up at Piradi, Riason, Barshing and Belai areas of Kullu town have been asked to abandon rafting activity immediately. Paragliding bases at Marhi and Solangnalah  have also been closed as weather is not conducive for flights.

As many as 80 tourists pilots use these air bases daily,venturing into
the sky. As many as 50 rafting companies have been come up in the district
in last five years employing 500 people in the activity at various points on the banks of Beas.

It is worthwhile to mention here that the order came after the incident in
which J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s wife Payal Abdullah and two sons Zahir and Zamir had a narrow escape when their raft overturned at Piradi near Kullu recently.
