Landslides blocks Hindustan-Tibet highway

Shimla (June 17): Massive landslides blocked the Hindustan Tibet Highway
(NH22) at Nathpa, 193 km from here, early this morning, disrupting the
traffic between Rampur and Kinnuar, stranding hundreds of vehicles on
both sides of the road and trapping 1000 of people, including
tourists.

Police sources said that heavy landslides and boulders came on
the road near Nathpa the near Dam site of 1500MW SJVNL project at 3.30
this morning as loose strata came down on the road after heavy rainfall in the area. The landslides snapped road communication to entire Kinnuar district
and Spiti Valley of Lahaul-Spiti district while long lines of vehicles
were visible on both side of the blocked road.

Many power projects are coming up around this highway and it is the only
medium of transport to deploy heavy machinery and work force on these
projects.

Meanwhile, report just received stated that National Highway-88 is also blocked between Solahamile and Kalihatti due to massive landslide, disrupting vehicular traffic between Shimla-Manali and Shimla-Dharamshala, which was latter diverted via Dhami.
