Shimla (May 15): Himachal Pradesh state unit of CPI(Marxist) has condemned the recent decision of the state cabinet in which it has allowed to lease out land to the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) in Nurpur and Gumma Mohal in Shimla district.

The government decided to lease out the state-owned outdoor stadium for the development of cricket stadium by HPCA and the stadium has been leased out for 30 years. Similarly, the government has decided to lease out 1.61 hectares of land to the HPCA in Gumma, once again for the development of cricket stadium at the behest of HPCA.

The party has asked the government the logic for benevolence shown to HPCA. The party has asked why the government is targeting only one sport and leaving other sports starved for funds and infrastructure development. CPIM has stated, “There is limited land in the state for infrastructure development for sports and instead of widening the scope of sports activity and developing sports where the state has acumen, the government is focusing only on cricket.”

“The state has a great potential of sports development in volleyball, athletics, boxing, hockey, where the state has achieved laurels even with meager support for the achievers. The government must develop multipurpose sports stadia for carrying out such activities and should create a separate sports fund under the chief minister and that should look after the development of sports activity in the state,” the party stated.

“The sports organization should be run through this fund and not from the funds of the corporates who finally decide even on the organizational aspect of the sports associations. This would make the activity more equitable, transparent and not like the present form where the captive organization like HPCA rules the roost.”

The party has stated that the cricket association that has become a fiefdom of BJP and its youth front . “It has got a fillip from various corporate houses, especially the JP group of companies that have sponsored their events in the state. This has been done with the active intervention of the state government,” the party alleged.
