Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPPC) has directed its councilors in Shimla Municipal Corporation to oppose the bill on imposing taxes and not let it in the house. Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) General Secretary Kuldeep Singh Rathour said this in a press conference here on Monday.

“Most of the councilors from merged areas are of congress and they will oppose the bill,” said Kuldeep Singh Rathour. Lashing out at Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) state government on the issue Rathour said that until basic facilities are not being provided to the people of merged area they are not liable to pay any tax. He said that the areas were merged in the corporation in 2007 and were exempted from paying. Exemption was later extended for one year. “In three years state government had failed to provide basic facilities in these areas,” he alleged. Further accusing the state government of weakening the Public Distribution System (PDS) he said during congress regime subsidies of Rs. 100 Crore were given for PDS while under BJP rule conditions of system have worsened.
